        TOURISM AUSTRALIA FORTÆLLER:
An update on the flood situation in Australia: 14 January 2011

Australia, like most parts of the world, is affected by extreme weather conditions from time to time. Recent heavy rainfalls in some parts of Australia, most notably in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales, have caused river levels to rise and severe localised flooding.

The Australian Government is providing assistance to communities affected by the floods and will continue to work with the Queensland Government in providing support.

While visitors are urged to avoid the flood affected areas of Queensland and other states, Australia remains open for business and continues to welcome travellers.

The Australian continent is very large and whilst the floods are widespread, they are in fact restricted to relatively small parts of the country. The vast majority of the major international travel destinations in Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are all unaffected.

The current flooding has impacted particular parts of Queensland including Brisbane and its surrounding regions, Rockhampton and regional communities in the central and southern Queensland area. However, the tourism regions of Whitsundays, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Port Douglas, Tropical North Queensland, the Sunshine Coast and Fraser Coast, and the Gold Coast, are all accessible and in many cases completely unaffected by the flooding.

The Bruce Highway is open between Brisbane and Gladstone and between Rockhampton and Cairns. However, for latest road conditions visit http://131940.qld.gov.au/

Brisbane Airport is open and still the major gateway to Queensland. All airports in Queensland except Rockhampton Airport are open.

For information on latest conditions visit http://www.qld.gov.au/floods or http://131940.qld.gov.au for the latest road updates.

Consumers who have any concerns about their current or upcoming bookings, should contact their travel agent, accommodation, attraction or tour provider directly, before cancelling or changing their travel plans.

For the latest flood news and updates Tourism Queensland recommends consumers visit the Queensland Government’s official Queensland floods webpage: http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/ or visit the Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/ to check weather forecasts for their holiday destination.

People wishing to directly help flood victims can donate to the Queensland Government Flood Assistance Appeal at http://www.qld.gov.au/floods

        International Students

International Students can contact the International Student’s Hotline on 1300 363 079 for general information.
Students due to travel to Australia for study in a flood affected area should:
visit the Bureau of Meteorology website (http://www.bom.gov.au) to check if they are travelling to a flood affected area
check with their airline carrier to ensure their flight is running as scheduled, as some regional airports have closed
keep in contact with their education provider and
follow advice from their local emergency services and police, keep clear of flood waters and comply with evacuation orders.
        International Visitors and Temporary Workers

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) is aware there are significant numbers of temporary visa holders, including overseas workers, tourists, and students as well as migrants, in flood-affected areas.
If people in affected areas hold a visa which is about to expire, or work for a business which has been affected, or are otherwise concerned about their immigration status, they should contact DIAC as soon as possible to discuss their circumstances and options available.
DIAC is also in contact with employers of visa holders in affected areas to offer advice and assistance. Businesses and sponsors who are concerned about the possible impacts on their overseas workers should also contact DIAC.
Affected visa holders or businesses can contact DIAC on 131 881.
